Slam Sunday: “Troll” by Shane Koyczan

Nothing Gold Poetry.

Once upon a time, you, and all your kind, lived underneath bridges, had ridges for ribs that dropped off into empty chests as if your hearts were stolen treasures.

“Troll” is a perfect poem for our modern world, comparing the monster myths of old and today’s connected culture. The video itself uses beautiful art and the perfect music to supplement Koyczan’s words, combining to create a refreshing audio-visual experience that makes the audience think about what it means to be a monster.

It’s the first Slam Sunday of the year, so of course I had to showcase my fellow Canadian Shane Koyczan. This isn’t a slam poetry piece per say, coming from a graphic novel, but it’s haunting and poetic and beautiful and you’re going to like it, damn it.
